It was one of those warm Provençal mornings that begins with a promise. By afternoon the temperature would reach 32 degrees, but for now there was still a gentleness in the air as we arrived at the St Tropez Polo Club in Gassin.
The terrace was already coming to life. Stylish seating spilled out towards the polo ground. Tables were laid for lunch. The bi-fold doors stood open to the dining room and waiters drifted between them carrying trays of drinks.
Conversation floated across the terrace. So did laughter.
Beyond it all, the polo field stretched away beneath a cloudless sky.
Then came the sudden thunder of hooves.
Riders accelerated across the grass. A voice called out from beside us.
“Take the man!”
For a few moments the pace was extraordinary.
Then, just as quickly, everything settled again.
That was what stayed with me.
Not the competition. Not the score. Not even the spectacle.
The rhythm.
One minute there was the explosive energy of horses and riders. The next there was another glass of rosé being poured, another conversation beginning, another perfectly unhurried Sunday afternoon unfolding in the sunshine.
At one point we found ourselves chatting with the Argentine coach who was providing the commentary. English, he explained with a smile, was considerably easier than attempting live match commentary in French.
It summed up the afternoon perfectly.
People from different countries brought together by horses, sunshine and the simple pleasure of being there.
After the match we wandered through the Haras itself.
There were horses standing quietly in their boxes. Cars bearing Monaco number plates parked beneath the trees. The scent of oleander drifted on the warm air.
Nothing dramatic happened.
Nothing needed to.
Some places leave a mark because they astonish you.
Others do so because, for a few hours, they allow life to move at exactly the right pace.
The St Tropez Polo Club was one of those places.
