Quiet Corners
August’s Make Life Special Challenge
I’m fortunate enough to have a garden and a small grove of fruit trees where I love to sit.
My alarm goes off at 5am throughout the year (4am if I have a breakfast meeting), but summer mornings are different. The sky is already brightening and, for a few precious moments, the world feels still.
Then comes my favourite part of the day.
The sun rises above the trees and its light finds its way through the branches until it reaches where I’m sitting.
It’s a simple moment.
But it’s one of those moments that reminds me what Make Life Special is really about.
The Moments We Remember
Most of us can remember a moment from childhood that seemed perfect.
A summer evening that never ended.
A favourite tree.
A hidden den.
Digging holes in the sand.
Reading a book while the rain tapped against the window.
A grandparent’s garden.
A place where, for just a little while, the world felt exactly as it should.
Those memories have stayed with us for years.
Not because they were expensive.
Not because they were extraordinary.
But because they were moments.
The wonderful thing is that those moments don’t have to belong only to childhood.
We can create them throughout our lives if we take the time to do so.
Sometimes it’s not about doing something selfish or taking time away from the world.
It’s about setting the scene.
Creating the moment.
Making a cup of tea.
Opening a book.
Watching a sunrise.
Sitting beneath a tree.
Having a conversation that matters.
Taking a few minutes to appreciate where you are and who you’re with.
At Graham John we spend much of our time helping people move from one home to another, but when people reflect on the homes they’ve loved most, they rarely talk about square footage or floor plans.
They remember moments.
They remember a chair in the garden.
A favourite spot in the kitchen.
A tree they climbed.
A view from a bedroom window.
The places where life happened.
This Month’s Challenge
Find your quiet corner.
It might be a garden bench, a favourite chair, a spot by the sea, a woodland path or simply somewhere that helps you slow down.
Create a Future Memory
Then create a moment.
Create a moment that next year will still surface in your memory.
Create a moment that a casual conversation will bring rushing back.
Create a moment that a smell, a sound or a ray of sunshine will transport you to.
Create a moment that will make life special.
Watch the sunrise.
Read a chapter of a book.
Listen to the birds.
Share a coffee with a friend.
Put your phone down.
Be present.
Because life isn’t measured by the number of days we have.
It’s measured by the moments that stay with us.
Where is your quiet corner?
Find it. Create a moment. Make Life Special.
